Now that you ask...

In 2017 Marijuana was declared legal to grow for private use and smoke on private property. It is legal to possess cannabis for personal use, but it's entirely unclear what quantity an individual may posses. Parliament was given two years to come up with a legislative framework to clarify and regulate use of the substance, but no word thus far. The already existing marijuana culture has taken this as the green light and stand united in the pursuit to legalise in a responsible and sustainable way. A formal industry has begun in South Africa with the issuing of the first licence to the House Of Hemp in April.  Currently all general legal prosecution appears to be suspended.

Cannabis is a crop, subject to the variability of any harvest. SA growers are independent and typically grow several strains in staggered cycles. The reliability of supply of any given strain is governed by the same forces as every market: supply and demand. Best sellers aren’t called ‘best sellers’ for nothing. The good shit gets snapped up in a flash and the quicker it sells the less chance you have of getting any more. Your best bet is not to dilly dally when something delicious pops up on the menu. Stock up good and proper to avoid disappointment.

The effect of Indica is generally classified as a ‘stone’, meaning that it is felt deeply in the body. Indica may enhance sensations such as taste, touch and sound. It is noted for the physical and mental relaxation it offers and may be soporific in larger doses.

The Sativa high is characterised as cerebral, energetic, creative, giggly or even psychedelic. It is less overpowering than the Indica ‘stone’ and permits the balanced user to be more productive.

In South Africa Indicas are far more common than Sativas, even though arguably the best pure Sativa in the world is Durban Poison.  Not everyone realises that it takes longer to grow Sativa - Indicas typically flower between 8 and 10 weeks, while Sativa flowers between 12 and 14 weeks.

Indicas thus harvest a more profitable yield in the grower’s calendar. The result is that Sativa is rare and when it becomes available, it’s always first to go up in smoke. You would be wise to stockpile – make hay while the sun shines, as it were.
